MAKE SLOW CLIMBS COOL AGAIN…

The development of indoor climbing has generally been towards a faster style, but some of the very best boulders are those that you have to creep across at a snails pace.

These may not be as exciting on instagram (let’s see how popular this one is…) but man are they satisfying to climb!

Here’s our TOP 3 TIPS on setting slower boulders that will outshine your jumps.

DIFFICULTY IS NOT ENOUGH!

When it comes to testing the elite competitors, relying on pure physical difficulty of a boulders can be a risk. This style of boulder tends to be easier to flash, especially if it is within the physical limits of the climber, so your judge of difficulty must be perfect.

For this reason, competition route setting has evolved to often include much more complex sequences which present more options for failure. Here’s our TOP 3 TIPS to add complexity into your competition boulders:

1. DIRECTIONAL HOLDS ARE ESSENTIAL. Flat or overly incut holds allow powerful climbers to overpower the moves and get away with movement errors. Lean into less powerful holds at steeper angles to force body positions. EXTRA TIP: Holds themselves can have complexity. These @unit_holds Force Majeure are a perfect example of this and inherently make this move harder to execute because of the small sweet spot on them.

2. MAKE IT UNOBVIOUS. If the climber can easily read the sequence from the ground, there is less chance for them to make a mistake. Lean into unobvious sequences, especially if you discover these whilst testing, as this ensures climbers use goes to figure out the beta.

3. REDUCE STABILITY. Ensuring positions are not too stable is great way of increasing the risk of failure. For instance, we purposely left the set up position for the paddle in this boulder without a right hand, as this forced a tricky foot swing to generate momentum, which added a ton of complexity to the movement.

TESTING BOULDERS NEAR YOUR LIMIT IS A TEAM EVENT

Although it is possible to test harder boulders solo, it’s always better to work with a team, especially if you understand the style, strengths and weaknesses of those you work with.

Testing harder boulders can be extremely physically taxing, so break them down into sections and attach them intelligently. Here’s some quick tips:

1) SIGN SECTIONS OFF. Once you’re happy with a section then move on, you don’t need to climb it every attempt.

2) WORK IN A TEAM. Not every person needs to climb every move. Break sections up and lean into what suits your style.

3) GET TO KNOW YOUR TEAM. This is often overlooked, but understanding the ability and style of the setters you work with gives you a huge advantage in judging difficulty. So hang out, go climbing together and work with your crew as much as possible!

Setter games is a route setting competition for the ages. 20 teams battle it out to set the best boulder possible, with their efforts judged by their peers, our international guests and Impact themselves!

Teams of 2 will be allocated a section of wall, volumes from our supporting partner @avavolumes and holds from some amazing brands, including from our Lead Partner @unit_holds and supporting partner @snap.holds. They'll have 2.5 hours to create and test their bloc, before a testing and voting session on day 2 decides the winner.

They'll be smaller prizes for category winners, but the best overall bloc will win it's team £1000 in COLD HARD CASH, along with a pretty incredible set of bragging rights!
